KUALA
LUMPUR: The city is expected to be squatter-free when some 15,000
low-cost houses are ready by the end of the year.
Mayor Datuk Abdul Hakim Borhan said the local authority was determined
to achieve its target of zero squatters soon.
"We have 65,000 low-cost units so far. The 15,000 will help
us achieve our target of having zero squatters."
He said the new units would be put up for sale after the general
election.
Meanwhile, the city council will be awarding trophies and cash
prizes to the top three residents' associations this year.
They will have to meet criteria such as the academic achievement
of students, teamwork among members of the association, the manner
in which social issues are handled and the upkeep of facilities.
"It was created in an attempt to curb vandalism, foster closer
relations among neighbours and create a sense of responsibility
in the community."
