KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional leaders have asked voters to evaluate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's inconsistency and not to be taken in by his rhetoric during his ceramah.
MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said former Parti Keadilan Nasional leader Dr Chandra Muzaffar should know better the record of the de facto PKR leader.
“Dr Chandra is a respected personality with great credibility. He has worked closely with him and certainly he knows a lot more about Anwar than others,” he said.
Ong also demanded to know why the DAP was still working with Anwar when he had a poor record on Chinese education when he was education minister, adding that voters should not be fooled.
MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said that Malaysians should realise the true character of Anwar, saying that he had not done anything for the Indians when he was holding several posts, including youth and sports, agriculture, education, finance and as deputy prime minister in the government.
“Now, one of his former close confidantes, Dr Chandra, is reaffirming whatever had been said by the Barisan Nasional about Anwar,” he said, adding that, “Anwar has so many faces and he puts on different faces at different occasions.”
On Monday, Dr Chandra Muzaffar pointed out that Anwar had said he would “make sure that the temple bells would not ring in the country anymore” following a clash between Indian Muslims and Hindus in Penang.
He also said that Anwar “was responsible for putting non-Chinese educated administrators in Chinese schools” and had switched from using the term Bahasa Malaysia to Bahasa Melayu.
Dr Chandra said that if Anwar became the prime minister, it would be an “unmitigated disaster” for Malaysia, adding that he was not the sort of leader the country needed as he was now singing a different tune from when he was in the government.
Yesterday, Federal Territory MCA chief Datuk Tan Chai Ho said he was detained under the Internal Security Act for his role in opposing the appointment of non-Chinese educated administrators in Chinese schools.
“It is very clear that Anwar does not want Chinese schools. It also shows he does not want Hindu temples. We should reject all PKR candidates,” the Bandar Tun Razak BN candidate told a press conference yesterday.
Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein described Anwar's pledge to provide free education as an empty promise because he could have done so when he was in the government.
“He did not do so when he was the Education Minister, the Finance Minister and the deputy prime minister,” he said when opening of SK Permatang Tok Labu in Kepala Batas yesterday.
